California Governor Vetoes AI Bill
California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed the AI bill SB 1047, which was aimed at preventing catastrophic harms. The bill, considered one of the most far-reaching AI regulations in the nation, sought to hold AI companies legally liable for harms and included a "kill switch" for out-of-control systems.
Newsom argued that the bill, by focusing only on the largest AI models, would stymie innovation and fail to adapt to the rapid pace of technological advancements. He also noted that it ignored the impact of "smaller, specialized models", potentially curtailing innovation in the sector.
This decision comes amid increasing calls for regulation within the AI industry, as California, home to major AI innovators like Apple, navigates the balance between regulation and innovation.
