Automated and generated content, pioneering AI Automation.

Meta releases Llama 3.1, a new open-source AI model with 405 billion parameters, aiming to outperform competitors. Concerns around AI impacts on employment and safety are also rising.

Meta's Open Source AI Strategy

Meta has released Llama 3.1, its largest open-source AI model to date, challenging competitors like OpenAI and Google. The model, boasting 405 billion parameters, is claimed by Meta to outperform GPT-4 and Claude 3.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg advocates for open-source AI development, asserting it as a strategic advantage for the US against China. He argued that closing off AI models would not effectively prevent Chinese access.

Elon Musk commended Zuckerberg’s move, stating, "Zuck does deserve credit for open-sourcing." This marks a rare moment of agreement between the tech moguls.

AI Impacts on Employment and Income

An increasing body of research indicates that AI impacts on employment could be significant, with many jobs at risk of automation. As AI systems become more advanced, a trend towards job displacement is observed, prompting discussions around solutions like Universal Basic Income (UBI).

Despite some promoting UBI as a remedy, a recent study funded by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, suggests that while UBI might help with immediate financial concerns, it is "far from a solution" to address the broader implications of AI-driven job losses.

Additionally, experts warn of a different risk: AI "self-destruct" due to self-training on artificial data. The study underscores the need for original data and filtering to avoid AI model collapse, adding another layer to the complex impacts of AI on society.

New AI Features and Innovations

Google is rolling out several new features for Google Play, including Collections, AI-powered app comparisons, and new rewards prizes like Pixel hardware.

Adobe has introduced a range of new features in its Illustrator and Photoshop Creative Cloud apps, leveraging generative AI to streamline productivity and save creators time. The updates include the integration of the Firefly model.

Apple is preparing to introduce a feature in iOS 18 that allows users to create customized playlist artwork in Apple Music using generative AI. Meanwhile, the Meta Quest 3 is set to become the first to include an AI personal assistant.

AI in Search and Content Recommendation

Microsoft’s Bing has previewed a new search results page that prominently features AI-generated information, pushing traditional search results to the side.

Amazon Prime Video is rolling out an AI-driven redesign aimed at ending decision paralysis and streamlining the viewing experience.

Meta has announced a significant AI update for its VR headsets, including the Meta Quest 3, Quest Pro, and Quest 2.

AI and Safety Concerns

AI and Safety Concerns are at the forefront of current discussions in technology. TikTok Lite, an app version popular in the Global South, lacks safeguards like labeling AI-generated content or warning about deceptive material, affecting up to 1 billion users. Furthermore, AI scrapers now face increasing challenges, as restrictions on data sources grow tighter, limiting their operational capabilities.

Another highlighted concern is distracted drivers; Nauto addresses this with AI cameras in commercial vehicles, designed to identify and warn about such dangers in real-time. Additionally, the dominance of English in AI testing presents a risky limitation, affecting the applicability and safety of AI in diverse linguistic contexts, as noted by Hamza Chaudhry.
