Nvidia stock dropped 9.5%, linked to AI and economic concerns. Google launches "Ask Photos" feature while Qualcomm unveils AI Snapdragon X Plus chips for affordable laptops.

Nvidia Stock Plunge

Nvidia stock fell 9.5%, shedding $278.9 billion in valuation. The loss is tied to concerns that include the health of AI and the US economy. Nearly half of Nvidia's Q2 revenue came from just four customers. That's "highly unusual" and investors should be on the look out, an analyst told BI.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's net worth plunged by about $10 billion to below $95 billion after the chipmaker's stock tanked on Tuesday. Nvidia's lawyers should now be cooperating with the DOJ and thoroughly reviewing all internal documents and communications, a legal expert says. NVIDIA share price tanks in record breaking fashion as tech stocks fall.

AI in Personal and Mobile Devices

AI in personal and mobile devices is becoming increasingly prevalent. Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Plus promises cheaper co-pilot PCs with enhanced efficiency, while AI smarts are now a key feature of Samsung's new Galaxy Book 5 Pro and Galaxy AI phones. The latest Asus Zenbook and Microsoft Surface devices demonstrate how tech companies are embracing AI for improved performance.

Devices like the Honor Magic V3 and Google's Drive app for Windows on Arm highlight AI-driven innovations, offering new functionalities and efficiencies. Even traditional product lines are getting an AI boost, with Aqara introducing a voice control system that listens selectively.

Savings on AI-powered devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Flip 6 and Mint Mobile’s deals on the Pixel 9 Pro XL underscore the growing accessibility of AI tech. As AI continues to evolve, personal and mobile devices are becoming smarter, more efficient, and more integral to daily life.

AI Legislation and Regulation

The landscape of AI legislation and regulation is rapidly evolving. Recently, multiple US states are leading efforts to combat the crisis of deepfake porn through various legislative measures, with WIRED tracking these developments. Additionally, a Gizmodo analysis of OpenAI’s chatbot store unveils over 100 tools potentially breaching company policies, covering areas like sexual content, cheating, and medical advice.

In another significant development, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), co-founded by OpenAI's Ilya Sutskever, has secured $1 billion in funding from top venture firms to develop AI systems focused on safety. Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch also discusses how 'frontier content' can help website owners navigate the challenges posed by increasingly sophisticated AI models and chatbots.

AI Tools and Applications

Google has announced the rollout of early access for its new "Ask Photos" feature on Google Photos, leveraging the capabilities of its Gemini AI to offer enhanced search functions for iOS and Android users. Stability AI has introduced its three most advanced text-to-image models—Stable Image Ultra, Stable Diffusion 3 Large, and Stable Image Core—on Amazon Bedrock.

Firefox 130 now includes the WebCodecs API for improved audio/video processing and third-party AI chatbots. A musician has been accused of using AI-generated songs and fake accounts to earn $10 million unlawfully through streaming. Goldman Sachs analysts suggest that AI advancements could potentially depress oil prices by augmenting supply more than increasing demand.

The EU is considering the establishment of a European AI Research Council to compete with the US and China. AI technology has been deployed effectively in a US murder case to solve the "cocktail party problem," helping to filter out background noise in audio evidence. Meanwhile, AI enthusiasts are excited about a recently launched AI video-generation app called Minimax, which is being used to create entire short films.

Foldable and Innovative Laptops

Lenovo's Auto Twist AI PC, capable of twisting fully around via voice command, garnered attention alongside Aura Edition laptops, highlighting Lenovo’s focus on AI innovation.

Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon X Plus chips for AI-driven laptops under $1,000, aiming to balance better processing and efficiency, even if battery life might suffer.

Samsung and Honor have also entered the foldable market with the Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360, featuring an Intel Core Ultra processor and powerful NPU, and the Magic V3, which may be a strong contender in the 2024 foldable space.
